Leading DC’s Conscious Capitalism Chapter

Farmers Restaurant Group is in the Founders Circle of an exciting new movement: the DC chapter for Conscious Capitalism. Co-Owner Dan Simons is also on the Advisory Board.

Seeking to elevate humanity through business, Conscious Capitalism empowers business leaders to have a purpose beyond profit and to create change in the business culture. Their mission is to connect, inspire, and activate leadership in our communities. The DC chapter is working to create a peer community and network of partnerships based on shared values and vision. Founding Farmers has sponsored several gatherings for the newly established group.

Team members from across Farmers Restaurant Group joined other local conscious capitalists  at the National Press Club on Feb 4th for an evening called, Leading with Love. John Mackey, co-founder & CEO of Whole Foods Market and co-founder of the Conscious Capitalism movement, gave a presentation on the strategies and techniques for encouraging “love in business,” as a way to elevate humanity and create value for all of an organization’s stakeholders. Tom Gardner, co-founder & CEO of The Motley Fool, joined Mackey for a fireside chat that delved into the tenets (and tensions) of running a conscious-minded business. The evening ended with a lively Q&A with the audience.

Joining the leadership of DC’s chapter of Conscious Capitalism is another step in our company-wide efforts to do more good and less harm across the district and beyond. One major community focus for us is to continue raising the bar across our industry. Our campaign turned non-profit, Our Last Straw, is doing just that through educating and encouraging other businesses to eliminate the distribution of plastic straws. Other recent efforts have included our hosting a Women in Hospitality: Pathways & Ladders panel at Founding Farmers & Distillers DC. With such a successful turnout, a second Women in Hospitality event is already in the works.
