Sustainability Award Winners

Farmers Restaurant Group won a big award last night: The People’s Choice Award at DC’s 2019 District Sustainability Awards

We are grateful to everyone who voted for us and appreciate being recognized for our efforts to eliminate plastic straws across DC and the launch of our coalition turned non-profit, Our Last Straw. We are always working to up the ante in oursustainability practices, even beyond the walls of our own restaurants.

Established by DC’s Department of Energy & Environment(DOEE), the district’s annual Sustainability Awards recognizes outstanding area businesses and organizations for their environmental stewardship, innovative best practices, pollution prevention, and resource conservation.

According to Tommy Wells, Director of DOEE, with the hundreds of votes coming in from all over DC, Farmers Restaurant Group was the “runaway winner” for this year’s award. Other nominations included: The George Washington UniversityRocklands Barbeque and Grilling CompanyTudor Place Historic House & Garden, and PaintCare.

When receiving the award, Co-Owner Dan Simons said:

“We all need to work together. DOEE is leading the way, and we can all get onboard and find ways to make a difference. This is really everybody’s award.”

So, let’s do this together. Take the Our Last Straw pledge to #StopSucking by saying “hold the straw” when dining out in DC, and everywhere you go, to do your part to help reduce your own reliance on single-use plastics, and inspire others as well.
